Big Top Donut

I absolutely love fun, whimsical cake molds like the Big Top Donut, which is a newer release from the makers of the popular as-seen-on-TV Big Top Cupcake giant cupcake pan. To me, if you’re going to go through the process of making a cake, it’s just as easy to bake one in a really fun, entertaining shape, as it is to bake a traditional round or rectangular cake.

One of the great things that I love about the Big Top Donut is that you can create a really unique cake without having a lot of baking or decorating skills. You don’t have to know your way around a pastry bag to decorate a Big Top Donut – you can cover it in regular cake frosting, sprinkle on your favorite donut toppings (we love nuts, coconut, or of course, sprinkles), and have a fantastic-looking cake.

Better yet, the Big Top Donut set includes three scribblers that are specially-designed to let you easily decorate your donut. The set also includes an easy idea booklet that makes suggestions about how to decorate your giant donut cake, though you or your kids will probably come up with plenty of ideas on your own.

I love that this is a really fun baking project that I can do with my toddler. She absolutely loves to help in the kitchen – she always wants to pour in the ingredients, stir anything that is in a bowl, and watch our creation cook in the oven. The Big Top Donut is awesome for her because she can do all of those things, plus pitch in and help with the decorating. I can let her pick out the color of icing and choose from different toppings. Also, the end result cracks her up – a giant donut is apparently hilarious to a toddler.

The Big Top Donut mold consists of two silicone bakeware sets. The pans are dishwasher safe and resistant to heat up to 500 degrees. You bake the top and bottom of the donut separately, then invert one on top of the other to create the 3d donut appearance. This also allows you to add a layer of frosting between the two cake layers – in my opinion, you can never go wrong with more frosting.
